Surma is a panethnicity residing in South Sudan and southwestern Ethiopia. It includes the Nilo-Saharan-speaking Suri, Mursi and Me'en. The tribe is very well known for their unique look, adorning themselves with natural paints, wild flowers, grasses and fruits. The colors go from vibrant yellows, earthy reds and bright whites, all mixed with outlandish accessories and elaborate headwear.
This project was about turning the Surma identity into a work of etno design. The first part consisted in breaking down their body paintings into elements in order to recreate patterns. After that, these patterns, mixed with a Surma-inspired color palette, were used to create different prints.
